History
Friends Junior Committee was formerly known as Egleston Junior Committee before Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta was formed in 1994. Egleston Junior Committee was created to allow young professionals the opportunity to give back to the patients through volunteering, in-service opportunities and fundraising events. When Scottish Rite merged with Egleston to form Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in 1998, SCOTS and KILTS from Scottish Rite and TWIGS from Egleston merged and became Friends. In light of this change, Egleston Junior Committee changed its name to Friends Junior Committee (FJC).
Historically, the main focus was planning and hosting the annual fundraiser, Blue Healer which celebrated 13 years of success (1994-2006). The Blue Healer party began in 1994 as a social event to capture the good-spirited rivalry between Duke University and University of North Carolina alumni who enjoyed boasting about their respective basketball programs. Recognizing the amount of energy behind the rivalry and tradition, members proposed to develop an annual benefit to raise money for the community. What started as a friendly sparring match between two schools evolved into a benefit for Children's.
Today, there are more than 30 friends groups in the community that support Children's through volunteer opportunities, fundraising events and special service projects. Friends Junior Committee (FJC) is still running strong and now focuses on planning two fundraisers per year, Party Atlanta in the fall and Cheers for Children, A Cause to Celebrate in the spring. FJC also plans monthly socials, hospital volunteering activites and special events.
