Volunteer at the Hospital

Once a month, FJC offers members a unique opportunity to volunteer and interact with hospitalized patients and their families at arts and crafts, puppet shows or bingo parties at the Egleston campus. All events, with a few exceptions, are held on Monday at 6:00 p.m. or on Friday at 5:00 p.m. The attendees for all events include patients, parents and siblings. Volunteer slots are limited, so advance notification of interest is needed.

Arts and Crafts parties are organized on 3 tables with one craft set-up at each table. The patients come to the party and they make as many crafts as they would like to make. Sometimes, a parent and/or sibling will come to the party too. Volunteers help the kids with the crafts and socialize.

Bingo parties are our most popular activity, as the attendees win prizes. This activity is set up with rows of chairs and the prize tables are set-up at the front of the room. Volunteers help with calling out the numbers, marking off the numbers, assisting kids with prize selection, playing a bingo card for late comers or assisting a patient with the bingo numbers.

Puppet shows are done 2 to 3 times a year with a real wooden stage and scripts. The room is setup in a semicircle of chairs with the stage at the front of the room.  After the show, the attendees can make a puppet to take with them.

An Easter egg hunt is held each year on Easter Sunday in the garden at Egleston hospital. Features include a fully dressed Easter bunny and lots of hidden eggs. Volunteers hide the eggs, assist the attendees in the egg hunt and one dresses up in the bunny costume.

Future opportunities are being explored at the Scottish Rite campus, with some weekday early afternoon activities.  FJC is also exploring volunteering in the gift shops.
